She gutted the general
just like
a fish.
The murderous plan
had gone according
to her wish.
She licked the blood
clean
from his favorite bayonet
while celebrating victory
and dancing
a pirouette.
The general never saw it
coming
and was in denial
because
One-eyed Mary
had a very pretty smile.
The revolution had ignited
with the burning
of his room
although it proved
inevitably
to be One-eyed Mary's doom.
They caught her
fleeing
into the ugly black night
carrying
the general's heart
much to the devil's delight.
She cried out in defiance
by praising
her master's name
for One-eyed Mary
knew it would be
her final claim.
So they put the traitor against the wall
and left her
and now she was totally blind.
As the firing squad
took careful aim
only laughter crossed her mind.
A bullet may puncture
the heart
or the head
but you can't kill
a woman
who is already dead.
