my little girl
and I,
too scared to move,
too numb
to cry.
In this last field of flowers
the beauty
still grows
as if nature
is unaware
of humanity's woes.
All of the colors
seem brighter
than ever before.
I want to hide
in this moment
and let my heart soar
into the skies of blue
way high
up above.
Once I had a family
and knew
about love.
Silently we lay
my little girl
and I,
too scared to move,
too numb
to cry.
From this last field of flowers
they will take us
away
into the unrecognizable
darkness
of man's evil prey.
I am proud
that my mother
was born a Jew
but her granddaughter
who is with me
doesn't have a clue.
They intend to take us
prisoner
and snuff out the light
although the Star of David
will always
burn bright.
Silently we lay
my little girl
and I,
too scared to move,
too numb
to cry.
In this last field of flowers
I take her
by the hand
and we will see each other
again
in the promised land.
