We're not sure if she's really a Duchess
but her sister always
let us in.
We know from previous visits
that the line of insanity
can be thin.
The younger sister cackles with laughter
and lead us to the drawing room
for tea
but the Duchess,
as we're supposed to call her,
is the one we want to see.
The little sister bows to the Duchess
and expects us
to do the same.
For a woman who never moves
she's still
a grand old dame.
The Duchess seems very quiet
and perhaps
a bit reserved
as high tea
and those yummy crumpets
are now being served.
Now remember
we are just curious children
playing on a summer's day.
So let's thank the duchess
and her sister
for a very pleasant stay.
The Duchess does not speak.
Well in truth
she never did
as the two sisters live in a time warp
and from the outside world
they have hid.
The Duchess is serene
and comfortable
with her chosen fate.
We pat her on the shoulder
and praise her
mummified state.
Into the glare of the afternoon light
we leave the sisters
behind
although such lovable eccentricity
may be the reason
they've lost their mind.
We'll be back to take high tea
with the Duchess
'cos how can we show any fear
when the lonely surviving sister
is the one who always sheds
a tear.
