To dance was to live
once upon
a time
and those
were the sacred moments
I captured in my prime.
To defy the laws of gravity
by liberating
one's feet
became a joy of creative freedom
and I knew it
complete.
God sent me
a challenge
much to my surprise.
From the bed
on that very morning
I could not rise.
I was pulled away
to the depths
of an anchored heart.
Without movement
in my legs
I didn't know where to start.
The choreography
had died
and the music did fade.
Once I was its mistress
now
I'm an old maid.
Can you lift me up
once again
as if it were a dream
or is reality
weighing me down
just like it would seem.
I sit here
day after day
in sorrow and defeat.
Even distant memories
cannot
take me from this seat
when this dying swan's
faint heartbeat
is the only sound
for someone who gave up
and is now
wheelchair bound.
